New businesses, locations & services
Charter, a broadband communications company and cable operator, and NFL Network recently announced they have reached a new, long-term agreement for carriage of the NFL Network. Charter will also offer the NFL RedZone channel to its customers.
Both the NFL Network and NFL Red Zone will be available for Charter customers in most markets in Virginia in time for the start of the NFL regular season. In this region, Charter services are available in western Hampton Roads, on the Eastern Shore and the Outer Banks.
Sumitomo Machinery Corp. of America in Chesapeake, U.S. headquarters for Sumitomo Drive Technologies, recently purchased Gleason gear machining equipment to increase its bevel gear manufacturing capabilities. All equipment will be delivered and in operation by April.
This represents the first phase of an extensive three-year investment, according to a company news release.
Sumitomo will launch the Cyclo Bevel Buddybox 4 and 5 series products in 2012, and the increased manufacturing capabilities will help support production of these two new product lines, according to the release.
If you need to know the wait time for a Busch Gardens roller coaster, the Williamsburg theme park has an app for that.
Now available for download at the App Store on iTunes, the mobile app sends information like restaurant menus, show schedules and restroom locations to a guest's smartphone. An interactive map helps those with GPS-compatible phones navigate the park.
An Android-based version will be available soon, according to a Busch Gardens news release.
Transactions
Children's Health System, parent company of Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, has entered into an agreement with Medical Tower Associates LLC to purchase the Medical Tower on the Norfolk medical center campus. Terms of the agreement are confidential, according to a news release from CHKD.
"We are extremely pleased about this solution to our growing need for space," said Jim Dahling, president and CEO of Children's Health System, in the release.
"As demand for our care increases and new technology and treatments evolve, we must find more room for clinical services within the hospital. The Medical Tower's proximity to CHKD makes it an ideal place to relocate services that need to be close – but not within – the hospital."
Tenants now in the Medical Tower will remain under their existing leases, according to the release, and S.L. Nusbaum will continue its management of the building.
The Mumford Co., a hotel brokerage headquartered in Newport News, recently participated in the following sales:
* It represented the Bank of the Commonwealth in the sale of the Capital Hotel Inn of Ashland to F&T Hospitality LLC. F&T plans to make renovations to the hotel and affiliate with the Motel 6 franchise system. David Mumford, Ed James and Justin Pinkard with the Newport News office of Mumford advised the seller.
* It represented Supertel Hospitality in the sale of the Masters Inn of Mount Pleasant, S.C., to OTV Masters LLC, a local investment group. The purchasers will continue to operate under the Masters Inn affiliation while they finalize plans for the future of the property. * It represented Supertel Hospitality in the sale of the Masters Inn of Tucker, Ga., to a regional entity with lodging interests across the Southeast and Midwest, which plans to renovate and continue operations as a Masters Inn. Meeting change
The Warwick Rotary of Newport News has relocated its weekly meetings to the Virginia Living Museum. The club meets on Monday nights for dinner at 6 p.m. in the Wild Side Cafe at the museum.
The Warwick Rotary is best known for co-founding the Virginia Living Museum in 1966 with the Junior League of Hampton Roads. The museum presented its first Golden Paw Award to the Warwick Rotary in 1995.
Scholarships
Bronco Federal Credit Union, headquartered in Franklin, has announced that four of its graduating seniors received $1,000 each from the Jackie O’Connor Memorial Scholarship given by the Tidewater Chapter of Credit Unions.
Scholarships went to Taylor Bradshaw and Will Lambdin of Southampton Academy, Sherrell Ashburn of Windsor High School and Shelby Christenson of Lakeland High School.
Events
The Olde Towne Business Association Auction will take place in Portsmouth, at 430 High St., on Sept. 3, to benefit the association, the Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra and Safe Trick or Treat.
Doors will open at 3:30 p.m., with the auction scheduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. Admission is candy, preferably Halloween candy, or a monetary donation to support Safe Trick or Treat on Oct. 29.
Antiques, jewelry, vintage furniture, collectibles and more will be auctioned. For more information, or to donate an item, call 405-3500.
BOSH Global Services will host a barbecue lunch for the Wounded Warrior Project on Sept. 16, on the lawn at the BOSH corporate office at 1 Compass Way, Suite 250, Newport News, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Funds raised during the event will benefit wounded service members on the road to physical and mental recovery.

The YWCA South Hampton Roads will hold its inaugural "Walk A Mile in Her Shoes" Men's Walk to End Domestic and Sexual Violence on Oct. 13, at Town Point Park in Norfolk.
The event marks the 30th anniversary of the Y's Response Sexual Assault Services Program and the 100th birthday of the YWCA SHR.
Men – and women, too – are invited to put on a pair of high heels – though the heels aren't mandatory – and walk through downtown Norfolk in a lighthearted attempt to build awareness of the serious issue of domestic violence and its impact on the community.
Check-in begins at 4:30 p.m. and the walk begins at 5:30 p.m. at the small amphitheater next to Waterside.
There will be a reception at 6:15 p.m. hosted by Elements of Waterside that will include food, drinks, music, awards and a raffle.

Honor Flight Historic Triangle Virginia will hold its sixth trip to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 22. The event is open to all World War II veterans, free of charge, who have not already visited the memorial.
The bus trip will depart from Virginia Beach, then stop in Williamsburg to accommodate Peninsula veterans and to hold a departure ceremony. In addition to the memorial, veterans will visit Arlington National Cemetery and the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
The veterans will be accompanied by trained volunteer guardians and a staff of paramedics. Wheelchair-bound veterans can be accommodated. Meals are provided to all attendees.
Veterans interested in participating must submit an application, available at www.honorflightHTVA.org or call, toll-free, (877) 424-VETS. The organization is also seeking volunteers to serve as guardians for the trip, to ensure the safety of each veteran.
HFHTV is a Williamsburg-based nonprofit organization formed in 2008 as part of the national Honor Flight Network. Through 2010, the national Honor Flight Network has taken 63,000 veterans to the WWII memorial.
Awards & honors
The Virginia Department of Education honored the Peninsula Council for Workforce Development, the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, New Horizons Regional Education Centers and the six Greater Peninsula school divisions with a regional and statewide Business and Industry Partnership award for the 2011 Youth Career Expo. The partnership was one of five regional winners.
The third annual Youth Career Expo was held in March at the Hampton Roads Convention Center. The event brought together more than 200 professionals to help prepare the more than 3,000 youth in attendance for the workplace.
The signature sponsor was Ferguson Enterprises Inc.
James River Bus Lines and its division, Carey Transportation, received an "Excellent in Safety" award from the Trax Insurance Co. This is the third year in a row that the company has won the award, which acknowledges the company's superior safety, training and maintenance programs.
Business Facilities magazine has ranked Virginia best in the nation in economic growth potential in its 2011 State Rankings Report. The rankings are based on an assessment of incentives programs; availability of skilled workforce; growth strategy; cooperation among business, government and higher education; and the growth potential of the location's targeted industries.

The area's multifamily housing industry honored its best people and properties at the recent Associates’ Showcase, Awards Banquet and RAM graduation, held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center and attended by more than 600 members and guests of the Tidewater Multifamily Housing Council of the Tidewater Builders Association.
Merit Awards were presented to individuals for outstanding performance and Awards of Excellence were given to outstanding properties in South Hampton Roads.
The individuals honored with Merit Awards included Margaret R. Flibotte of Frye Properties, who received the 2011 Multifamily Lifetime Achievement Award, and Tim Faulkner of The Breeden Co., who was named the Multifamily Executive of the Year.
Other Merit Award recipients were Lee Davis of S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co., who won the Gordon A. Poole Regional Property Manager of the Year Award; Charlene Adkins of Clark Whitehill Enterprises, who won the Peggy B. Cowan Property Manager of the Year Award; Jamie Sigmon of Lawson Realty Corp., named The Apartment Book's Leasing Consultant of the Year; Anthony Johnson of Lawson Realty Corp., who won the Maintenance Supervisor of the Year Award; Reginald Pritchett of Lawson Realty Corp., who won the Rebecca Hughes/Sam Shetsul Maintenance Employee of the Year Award; and Rick Zimmer of Lawson Realty Corp., who won the Above and Beyond Award.
Mike Devine won the Chairman's Plaque for his efforts in leading the TMHC for 2011.
